01 Nov Flu Season: Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones
As the colder months approach, so does the dreaded flu season. While it may seem like a yearly inconvenience, the flu can have serious health consequences, especially for vulnerable populations like the elderly, young children, and those with underlying health conditions.
The flu, or influenza, is a respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It’s highly contagious and can spread through droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Symptoms typically include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue.
The best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get vaccinated annually. The flu vaccine can significantly reduce your risk of getting sick and, if you do get sick, can lessen the severity of your symptoms.
Additional tips to stay healthy include practicing good hygiene, such as washing your hands frequently with soap and water, especially after being in public places. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water aren’t available. Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth. Stay away from sick people if possible. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, countertops, and electronics. Get enough rest, as adequate sleep helps boost your immune system. Eat a healthy diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to strengthen your immune system.
While most people recover from the flu at home, it’s important to seek medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing, persistent high fever, severe or persistent vomiting, confusion, or severe chest or abdominal pain.
By taking these preventive measures and seeking medical attention when necessary, you can help protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu. Stay healthy and have a wonderful flu season!
